Laser engraving stamps: Tips and tricks

Follow our tips for quickly and easily laser engraving stamp text plates in three steps. We also offer tips and tricks for what to consider when laser engraving rubber stamps. More information about the benefits of laser engraving stamps can be found on our application page.

3 steps to creating stamp text plates Tips for laser processing

3 steps to the perfect stamp

Step 1: Draw the stamp layout in the graphics program

Create the layout the way it should be printed later on the paper. No mirroring or inverting of the graphic in the graphics program is required when creating stamps. Selecting “Stamp” process type in the printer driver automatically mirrors or inverts the graphic for laser engraving. Even the laser cutting line can be selected in the printer driver for automatic cutting, meaning that it does not have to be specially drawn.

Step 2: Printer settings

Select the following settings in the printer driver:

Size: Enter the size of the stamp. If you are using a Trodat stamp you can select it from the list
Materials: Rubber - Use the tested laser parameters from our material database.
Process type: Stamp - the layout for the laser engraving is automatically mirrored and inverted
Resolution: 600 dpi or more
Cutting line: optimised - the laser cutting line is adapted to the layout, preventing an impression of the layout background
Raster algorithm: Black-white
Shoulders: Standard: medium

Step 3: Laser processing

You can now being laser processing. Once complete clean your rubber in the ultrasonic bath or alternatively using water and a bruch. The rubber is now ready to be placed in the stamp.

What must be taken into account when processing rubber stamps with a laser machine?

What depth of laser engraving is needed to obtain a clean impression?

The parameters for Trodat Aero rubber stamps are available in our JobControl® material database. The engraving depth is automatically set in this parameter. When using other rubber stamps, engraving depth required is about 1.1 mm to create a good impression.

What are shoulders?

To obtain a clean, detailed impression on paper, it is important to create "shoulders". Shoulders give the letters and characters of a stamp text plate more stability at the base. Shoulder parameters will vary depending on the fineness of the stamp, but you can use the following shoulder settings in the JobControl® laser software:

  • Steep: suitable for large areas
  • Medium: well suited for standard text stamps
  • Flat: ideal for fine fonts and characters

Using extraction systems

Laser processing rubber and rubber stamps produces dust and odour. An efficient extraction system is essential for effective removal of the dust particles. It should be equipped with a sufficient proportion of activated carbon to filter the odours. We recommend laser engraving the stamp plate from the top downwards so that the engraving quality is not affected by dust particles.

Which lens is suitable for producing text plates and stamps?

For fine details, we recommend using the 1.5” lens.

How can I further increase my stamp engraving productivity?

Laser engraving rubber requires a relatively high power output to achieve a certain level of productivity. The more power available in the laser machine, the faster the job will be completed. Additionally, JobControl® software features the “link” function. If this is activated, small connecting bridges are automatically set between the laser-engraved and laser cut text plates. The benefit of this function is that it allows you to laser engrave and clean an entire DIN A4 stamp plate in a single process. Once processed you can simply break the individual text plates out. Thus, your output can be significantly increased in comparison to an individual stamp motif. Laser etching rubber for stamp production offers many advantages.
