A look behind the scenes at VDL Wientjes.

Regular visits to customers are important to Trotec. Recently we were warmly welcomed to VDL Wientjes, one of the largest plastic processors in the Netherlands. We met with Reinier Aukema (Engineer at VDL Wientjes in Roden) who showed us around the facility and discussed the business and how they use their Trotec laser engraving machines. Read on to find out more about this special behind the scenes look at a high-tech company where the sober 'north' mentality prevails.

About VDL Wientjes

Founded in 1909, VDL Wientjes has been an independent company within the VDL group since 2005, with more than 60 employees. The company develops, produces and assembles various plastic products from materials including PE, PP, POM, PMMA and polycarbonate to name a few. The team use a variety of machinery including vacuum forming, CNC milling, welding and laser engraving to process materials. The core products produced by the team are the development and production of plastic products, particularly for customers in the medical and automotive industries. Reinier Aukema said "We have many European customers, but we see our products all over the world".

The challenge

VDL Wientjes use three Trotec laser engravers in their production which we saw during our tour. This includes two Speedy 400 systems and a Speedy 100 that the company has operated for 16 years. Reinier explains why they invested in laser technology "We chose laser technology, because we were due to traceability requirements to laser engrave codes on the plastic parts that we produce. So we mainly use the laser machines for engraving tasks, including both textual codes and dates as well as matting plastics ".

The Trotec solution

When purchasing their laser system, the team opted for Trotec as consistent engraving quality is required at high speeds. Reinier said "Our distinctive character is that we can offer the highest quality. When purchasing our next lasers, the choice was simple because we wanted a copy of the first laser in the event of a failure, so that the workflow did not have to be adjusted, as we had written our own software for the laser machines. We have an automatic program for every application that the laser user can use. In total about 10 different people work with the laser machines, but through our automated software the end result is always the same. We hope to be able to run production for a long time with our Trotec laser systems".
