Find out more about laser processing metal foils and what to consider pre-processing.
Trotec laser offer a range of solutions for laser engraving or laser marking metals that can be used for a broad range of applications.
Thin metal foils can be laser cut but there are a number of parameters that define material suitability. These include the type of metal, material thickness, quality desired and accuracy of the cut edges.
Trotec laser cutting machines are optimised for working with non metal materials. Although there are some restrictions when cutting metal foils, it is possible. However, any material for this application should be tested by Trotec before you process it yourself.
Generally speaking, it is possible to cut metal films with both CO2 and fiber laser sources. Foils made from steel or ferrous materials can be cut easier than light or non-ferrous metal foils such as copper or aluminium.
Processing gases facilitate the laser cutting process and improve the final cutting quality in some applications. Gas kits (with appropriate fittings and nozzles on the work heads) are available for selected Trotec laser machines and can be used with corresponding process gases (such as nitrogen).
Thin metal foils made of materials based on ferrous materials can be cut with the CO2 laser source.
Very reflective foils made from copper or brass can be cut with similar results using a fiber laser source.
