plant signs laser cut

Plant
identification signs

Step by step guide

Create custom gardening signs using your Trotec laser to cut and engrave different materials. We have three different designs featured in this tutorial, allowing you to label your fruit, herbs and vegetables in style.

Materials can be found on our engraving supplies webshop.

Preparation

Materials required:

  • 10 mm acrylics or 4 mm colourful acrylics

Trotec laser machine used

  • Speedy 400
  • 80 watts
  • 2.5 inch lens

Tip:

  • Use a cutting table to produce this sample

Step by Step

Step 1: Importing the graphic

The first step is to import the PDF file into the Corel Draw software and select the graphic you want to process (the tabs below show the working area in Corel Draw). The following graphics can be found in the file:

  • garden gnome (optimised for transparent acrylics)
  • retro design
  • clean design

Step 2: Customise the graphic

Use the text tool to edit the name of the plant, spice or herb. Once you are happy with the text send the graphic to your laser.

Step 3: Laser settings

We used the following parameters with the Speedy 400 laser cutting machine (80 watts with 2.5 inch lens). Depending on your laser machine and the available power these parameters may vary.

Parameters for 10mm acrylic:

Laser engraving: Power: 70% - Speed: 100% - Frequency: Auto - Air Assist: ON
Laser cutting: Power: 100% - Speed: 0.1% - Frequency: 20,000 Hz - Air Assist: ON - Z-Offset: -1.50mm

Parameters for 4mm acrylic:

Laser engraving: Power: 35% - Speed: 10% - Frequency: Auto - Air Assist: ON
Laser cutting: Power: 30% - Speed: 0.1% - Frequency: 8,500 Hz - Air Assist: ON

Hint - Laser cutting table:

By using an acrylic laser cutting table beam reflections on the reverse of the material are prevented.

It is important that gasses produced are extracted when laser cutting acrylics to avoid flames and to achieve crystal-clear flame polished edges.
