Laser precision at eyewear designer ic! berlin.

About ic! berlin

ic! berlin was founded in 2003 and is today one of the most innovative brands for high-quality designer eyewear in the upper price segment. Originally started as inventor and pioneer of the screwless "tin glasses," ic! berlin has been following the steady increase in customer demand for plastic frames, especially those made of high-quality cellulose acetate.

The frames, made of a wide variety of materials, are manufactured in the modern factory in Berlin and sold worldwide. The majority of the 130 employees work at ic! berlin brillenproduktions GmbH. This is where all the main production steps take place, from cutting the material to final assembly.

Laser precision from design to series production.

Based on years of experience in the use of laser systems in the metal sector, ic! berlin was now looking for a supplier to implement laser technology in the plastics segment as well. The challenge was to find a laser system that would be suitable for the designers' new developments for prototyping and also series production.

The most important production requirement for the temple ends was precise cutting from a larger acetate sheet. At the same time, the temples were to be marked in larger quantities and in a very short time per setup process.

The choice of the Trotec laser was based on the recommendation of a friendly company in the eyewear industry, which had already been able to successfully solve similar tasks with the predecessor model of our Speedy 360 for some time.

Economical and fast.

A combination of 3-axis milling and laser cutting can now be used for the economical production of the stirrup ends. The same laser is also used for high-quality labeling of the temple ends.
In addition to using it for series production, the designers at ic! berlin now have the Speedy 360 laser engraver to turn new designs from a CAD file into a real 2D pattern in a matter of minutes.

"The data import and operation are really very simple and thus significantly accelerate our product development processes. The closed Trotec system with integrated extraction is very compact, safe, and quiet." Edmir Asoski, project manager acetate bow end production.
