Lanterns are one of the most versatile home accessories and can add ambience and warmth to any space or room. Learn how to engrave your own lantern by following the below step-by-step tutorial.
- Glass lantern (angular, 10x10x10cm)
- Candle (height 8cm, diameter 6cm)
- Paper towel
- Laser engraver Speedy 400
- 120 Watt
- 2" lens
- vacuum table
You can use any laser machine from the Speedy laser engraver series for this DIY.
Use some damp paper towel to prevent the glass from splintering during laser processing.
In order to prepare the glass, simply place a single, thin layer of paper towel on the spot where you would like to engrave the lantern. Dampen the towel with a sponge or spray bottle, making sure there are no folds or air bubbles.
Use the free template we have provided or, alternatively, create your own unique design. Using the following laser engraving settings, send the job to the laser machine:
|Process mode||Resolution||Cut line|
Depending on the laser machine you are using and the available laser power, the recommended laser parameters may vary. Ensure that you deactivate air assist in order to prevent the paper towel from drying.
Place the lantern on the vacuum table. To prevent scratches, we suggest placing a sheet of paper under the glass. For optimal laser engraving results, the surface that will be engraved must have an even height. If your lantern has a beveled shape, you will need to compensate for differences in height.
|Colour||Process||Power (%)||Speed (%)||ppi/Hz|
|black||Engrave CO2||90||100||500 ppi|
Remove the glass from the laser machine once the laser engraving is complete. Use a damp cloth to clean the engraved surface.
Simply place a candle inside the lantern and watch your masterpiece come to life!
To enhance the contrast and detail of the laser engraving, we suggest using a dark coloured candle. Lanterns can be used for a wide range of occasions, including birthdays, weddings, parties, Christmas - the list goes on! Having fun experimenting with different sized lanterns and designs!
