wooden coaster laser cut

Coaster from acrylic and wood

Request a demo

This is a great example of an application that uses multiple different materials to achieve a striking effect. Learn how to create this stunning coaster by reading the below step-by-step guide.

Preparation

Required material:

  • 2 sheets of TroGlass Colour Gloss, one with double-sided adhesive tape
  • 2 sheets Alder wood 3 mm thick, one with double-sided adhesive tape
  • Covering material
  • Adhesive tape

Machine used:

Note: you can use any laser machine from our Speedy Series for this application.

Important:

  • Use the acrylic cutting grid table or the acrylic slat cutting table.
  • Remove the protective foil from the side of the acrylic that you want to engrave. Leave the protective foil on the bottom as this will protect the acrylic sheet from scratches during handling.

Step by Step

Step 1: Import /create design template

Import our design template into your graphics program, or alternatively, feel free to create your own. Remove the protective foil from the side of the acrylic that you wish to engrave.

 Print settings:

process mode resolution cut line
standard 500 dpi none
halftone others

Step 2: Laser process

Proceed with engraving and cutting out the design (B) from the acrylic sheet with the adhesive tape. For optimal results, we recommend using an acrylic cutting grid table or acrylic slat cutting table as these tables reduce the reflections of the laser beam on the back of the material. Cover the rest of the table and remove the protective film from the top side.

Then, cut the outer contour (B) from the acrylic without the adhesive tape.

Laser Parameters for Acrylic:

colour process power (%) speed (%) ppi/HZ
black engrave CO2 14 20 500
red cut CO2 100 1 1000
passes Air Assist Z-Offset Advanced
1 on - -
1 on - -

Laser Parameters for Alder Wood

colour process power (%) speed (%) ppi/HZ
black engrave CO2 45 50 500
red cut CO2 100 1.4 1000
passes Air Assist Z-Offset Advanced
1 on 6 -
1 on - -

Info:

  • We have used the standard laser parameters from JobControl® as they are optimised for speed.
  • The z-offset allows you to get a smooth engraving result.

Step 3: Post-processing

The acrylic material requires no post-processing cleaning. Simply remove the protective foil from the back of the acrylic material, it's that simple!

Once you remove the cover from the cut-out circles, alternate the position of the acrylic and wood items starting from the outside. This will create striking effects without wasting valuable material.

Inspirations

  • The fiber laser source on the Speedy flexx laser machine creates incredible results on darker acrylic material.
  • If you use a 1.5" lens, the engraving on the acrylic becomes very bright. You can also cut 3mm material with this lens.
