Acrylic laser cutting

PMMA, Acrylic, PLEXIGLAS®, & Perspex®

What types of acrylic materials are suitable for laser processing?

Acrylic (PMMA) is ideal for laser cutting applications such as point of sale displays, indoor and outdoor signage, and illuminated advertisements. Laser cutting systems are capable of processing a variety of material thicknesses and can even cut acrylic sheets up to 1 inch with ease. Clear, flame-polished edges are achieved in an efficient, single step process, eliminating the need for any additional post-processing. Acrylic can also be laser engraved with a CO2 laser for a frosted, matte finish, or it can be marked with a fiber laser system to create a color change, creating endless customization potential.

What are some examples of acrylic cutting applications?

Applications

A laser system is the ideal tool for acrylic laser cutting and engraving, as a laser beam can accurately and efficiently process acrylic materials, regardless of the shape or depth. There are numerous advantages that a laser cutter can provide over competitive technologies, and its capabilities are particularly valuable in the marketing and advertising industries.

  • Acrylic trophies
  • Advertising technology
  • Architectural model construction
  • Digital printing
  • Displays
  • Letters
  • POS materials
  • Outdoor and indoor signs
  • Shop and exhibition stand construction

Why should I buy a laser for acrylic cutting?

Laser cutting systems drastically reduce processing time and increase efficiency by producing crystal clear edges without the need for extra post-processing. Additionally, processing acrylic with a laser cutter can reduce costs up to 88% compared to traditional milling machinery due to reduced processing times and no additional tool and grind costs.

What are the functions and advantages of laser technology?

Perfectly polished laser cut acrylic edges without any post-processing

  • Improve production time and reduce the costly process of manually polishing matte edges

Advantages of a Trotec laser

  • Intelligent air flow and precise axis drives ensure optimal laser cutting results

Increased cutting speeds

  • Unlike milling cutters and other technologies, acrylic laser cutters can produce processing speeds up to 2-3 times faster depending on the power output used

Advantages of a Trotec laser

  • Carefully designed beam paths and sophisticated path planning

Non-contact processing

  • Compared to traditional milling cutters, there's no wasted time adjusting and positioning materials
  • No warping of the material

Advantages of a Trotec laser

Fine tools

  • Unique shapes and curves can be laser cut accurately down to a tenth of a millimeter

Advantages of a Trotec laser

  • Ideal beam performance and optics

No wear and tear

  • No wearing of the laser beam as a result of material processing
  • No additional costs for replacing tools unlike milling cutters

Advantages of a Trotec laser

No shavings

  • Unlike other technologies, laser cutting acrylic evaporates any excess waste and no shavings are produced

Advantages of a Trotec laser

High quality and efficient engravings

  • Laser engraving acrylic produces a high-quality matte finish on the surface of the material, providing more opportunity for customization and enhanced value
  • The laser engraving process is achieved within seconds, unlike with standard milling cutters, and there is no need for additional cleaning or post-processing steps

Advantages of a Trotec laser

  • Speedy laser engravers are the fastest flatbed lasers on the market with a maximum engraving speed of 140 in/sec and 5g acceleration

Laser cut cast PMMA without burrs

  • The need for time-consuming deburring is completely eliminated with the single-step laser process

Advantages of a Trotec laser

  • Superior-quality optical components and optimal laser beam performance create ideal laser cut acrylic results

Simple digital manufacturing

  • Create your designs in your preferred graphics program and then simply send them to the printer via the printer command

Advantages of a Trotec laser

"We love both our Trotec Speedy 300 and 400 Flexx lasers. In our 23 years of business we’ve owned 9 different lasers from 3 different manufacturers and I can easily say that the Trotec’s are the best machines we own. They are fast, reliable, and the Job Control software is an incredibly powerful tool."
- Mark Case - The Finer Line, Inc. -
"I never thought that I would be doing such unique engraving, cutting and marking on this many different types of materials, companies, and applications. On the galvo side I have been able to achieve a deeper penetration with clean vertical edges and no "beveling effect" that is common with CNC of Mill type work. We are known thru the area and have had people come in because of this."
- Jimmy Newton - Engraver's Gallery -
"Our Trotec Hybrid laser has been a great addition. The combination of CO2 engraving and YAG engraving has provided fantastic versatility for all our engraving projects. The laser's low maintenance rail system has provided basically maintenance free operation as well providing excellent engraving quality."
- Brian Wurgler - Buena Park Plaque & Trophy -
