About Project i-TRACE

Project i-TRACE is an industry-wide initiative by the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and GS1 Australia designed to standardize the identification and tracking of rail parts using global data standards. By assigning each part a unique barcode identifier, i-TRACE enables accurate digital records for maintenance, asset management, and compliance. This creates a safer, more efficient, and transparent rail supply chain.

Through the use of Trotec laser marking systems, components can be permanently marked with high-precision, durable identifiers that meet GS1 global standards. These laser-marked codes allow instant access to a part’s master data and history when scanned, supporting automation, reducing manual paperwork, and improving traceability.

Ultimately, i-TRACE enhances efficiency, safety, and lifecycle management across the rail industry by delivering consistent, digital visibility from manufacturer to operator.

Reliable and compliant laser barcode marking for the rail industry

For the rail sector, where compliance, traceability, and lifecycle management are critical, Trotec provides precise and durable barcode marking solutions that meet GS1 and i-TRACE standards. Using SpeedMark and Ruby® software, Trotec systems can generate and mark 2D DataMatrix and linear barcodes containing dynamic data such as serial numbers, batch codes, and maintenance records.

Laser marking ensures permanent, tamper-proof identification on metal and plastic components - essential for asset tracking, maintenance history, and supply chain visibility. Unlike printed or labelled identifiers, laser-marked codes withstand harsh rail environments without fading or degradation, reducing downtime and consumable costs.

At AusRAIL, Trotec’s U300 and Speedy 100 cross will demonstrate high-contrast, GS1-compliant barcode marking on rail-grade materials, showcasing how laser technology supports the industry’s move toward digital traceability and smarter asset management.
