The Gruson Greenhouses of Magdeburg in Germany are a tropical-botanical garden with an extensive botanical display collection for adults and families.
11 employees take care of more than 4,500 plant species on about 4,000 m² space, as well as of the free time offers and events. Since the creation of the Gruson Greenhouses in 1896, several million visitors have seen the cacti, succulents, palms, ferns, etc. there.
For a long time, signs were produced using a conventional printer to label the plants in the greenhouses and botanical gardens for visitors. However, since these plant labels could not withstand the extreme climatic conditions in the long term, an alternative was sought. Through a field report from another botanical garden, they came up with laser technology.
"In a tendering procedure of a public client, the most economical offer must be taken. Decisive factors are not only the acquisition and follow-up costs, but also the availability of on-site customer service," says Dr. Ludwig Martins, scientific director of the Gruson Greenhouses. That is why the decision was made in favor of Trotec.
In the Rayjet50 laser engraver they found their perfect solution.
"The simple operation of the Trotec laser and its software enable us to produce quickly. At the same time, with Trotec, we have a supplier who can also provide us with the acrylic laminate in the colors we want for our plant labels. The material in combination with the laser engraving and laser cutting enables us not only to use the labels permanently, but also to produce visually / aesthetically appealing and high-quality signs that can withstand the extreme humidity in the greenhouses as well as frost and direct sunlight outdoors", explains Dr. Ludwig Martins.
So far, we are using the laser "only" for the production of plant labels. In the long term, however, we also plan to produce souvenirs for our visitors, for example.
With Trotec materials, we not only have the color of our choice, which we couldn't find with many other suppliers, but also a plate size optimized for our laser.
