Step 1

Step 1: Set Up Your Graphics

Be sure that when you are designing your unique graphics, the finished file is as wide as the circumference of your rolling pin and as tall as your rolling pin barrel.

Simple geometry tips:

  • Diameter - how wide the barrel of the rolling pin is if you measured it from the two widest outside points across the barrel
  • Circumference - length if you wrapped a tape measure around the outside of the barrel (to find the circumference, take the diameter and multiply it by 3.14)

Important: If you are using text in your design, make sure that it is reversed. That is, the text needs to look backwards. This will ensure that when the text is imprinted in the dough, it will read the correct way.

Step 2: Prepare the Rolling Pin

Deep engraving requires high power from the laser machine. It is important to therefore make sure that the non-lasered parts of the barrel are clean of soot and scorching. Use application, masking or painters tape to mask the entire rolling pin. Ensure that the tape is as even and bubble-free as possible.

Step 3 - Laser Settings

Import the PDF file into Corel Draw and feel free to customise the design as you wish. Alternatively, you can create your own unique design and send it to the laser machine. Ensure that the rotary attachment has been activated and the diameter of the rolling pin has been entered in the 'properties' dialogue.

Engraving:

  • Power: 100%
  • Speed: 15%
  • Frequency: 500 ppi
  • Air Assist: ON

Step 4 - Cleaning

Once the laser machine has finished, remove the rotary attachment and take off the application tape. It is important to inspect the rolling pin for smoke residue. We recommend thoroughly scrubbing the rolling pin with a dish brush and soap to make sure all the dust in the engraved patterns does not get in your dough. Extra smoke residue left on the barrel can be lightly sanded off if the rolling pin is unfinished.

Now it's time to bake and eat some delicious animal imprinted cookies. Enjoy!

Tips:

The attached file is for a rolling pin that is 25.4 cm long and 6.07 cm in diameter.
