Tip
You can offer your customers a multitude of alternative colour combinations thanks to Trotec's wide range of laser engraving materials.
Step by step
Step 1: Import design
Feel free to use our template that we have provided or alternatively you can create your own unique design. Once finalised, send the file to the laser using the driver settings below:
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Vector Job | 1000 dpi | None |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Colour | Optimised geometries |
Step 2: Cutting TroGlass Materials
Begin by positioning the first TroGlass material on the acrylic cutting grid of your Trotec laser machine. Proceed to cutting the individual pieces. Repeat this process for the other materials. We removed the protective foil on the material prior to laser cutting as we did not want to remove it for every single individual piece. You can leave the protective foil on the material if you wish. The parameters used may vary depending on the machine used and the laser power made available:
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
Red | Cut CO2 | 100 | 0.9 | 1000 |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | On | - | - |
Tip:
We used a SP500 laser cutter for cutting the black back plate as we wanted to have an overall large design. The Speedy 360 was too small to perform the job. If you do not have access to such a large laser working area, you can reduce the complete graphic or simply cut a round base plate only.
Step 3: TroLase Foil
The two half circles of TroLase foil are the all-over background on which we put the individual pieces. Send the half circle to the laser using the following parameters:
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Vector Job | 1000 dpi | None |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Colour | Optimised geometries |
Step 4: Cutting TroLase Foil
Position the TroLase Foil on the acrylic grid. Cut the half circle using the below parameters. Please note you will require 2 pieces.
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
Red | Cut CO2 | 40 | 2 | 1000 |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | On | - | - |
Step 5: Design Solid Wood Maple
You can now send the design for MDF and solid wood maple. Use the below parameters:
Process mode | Resolution | Cut line |
---|---|---|
Vector Job | 1000 dpi | None |
Halftone | Others |
---|---|
Colour | Optimised geometries |
Step 6: Cutting solid wood
Change the acrylic cutting grid against the honeycomb cutting table and cut the maple wood using the following parameters:
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
Red | Cut CO2 | 100 | 1.4 | 1000 |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | On | - | - |
Tip:
We suggest you use the small nozzle and, if available, a lot of compressed air in order to achieve clean cutting edges.
Step 7: Cutting MDF
Put the MDF plate into your Trotec laser machine. Using the following parameters, cut the single pieces:
Colour | Process | Power (%) | Speed (%) | ppi/Hz |
---|---|---|---|---|
Red | Cut CO2 | 90 | 0.4 | 1000 |
Passes | Air Assist | Z-Offset | Advanced |
---|---|---|---|
1 | On | - | - |
Step 8: Assembly
Now for the most time-consuming step of this DIY tutorial - assembling the decoration.
Firstly, glue the two star-like base plates with the circle of TroGlass Satins. Ensure that the two large pieces are accurately positioned - edge to edge. You then need to turn the decoration and remove the protective foil (if you haven't already removed it prior cutting). Fix the two half circles of TroLase Foil. Now take the time to apply the pieces of different materials.
When you are confident with how they are positioned, glue it on the white base plate. We recommend having an image of the finished product to refer to whilst assembling. You will find this image in the download document provided.
Once all pieces have been fixed, you can then mount the decoration on the wall using the mounting devices.
Inspiration
This decoration piece also makes a perfect wall clock. Simply cut a hole in the middle and insert the clockwork from behind. It's that simple!
This creation can be easily tailored to fit into any office, clubhouse, lounge, etc. Combine other TroGlass colours and wood types to suit your needs.
