About Makerspace Adelaide.
Makerspace Adelaide is a community fabrication workshop that endeavours to explore the possibilities of invention and innovation. Providing affordable access to a range of tools and digital technology, including laser cutters, Makerspace Adelaide brings together members of the general public and educates them on the importance of traditional making and engineering skills. Floor manager, Luke Tansell, is incredibly passionate about the initiative and takes great pride in helping members learn how to safely use the tools and equipment.

According to Luke, the Trotec Speedy 300 is “by far the most popular machine in Makerspace Adelaide”. The 80-watt CO2 laser cutter not only unlocks a myriad of opportunities for members, but also sparks creativity, enthusiasm and inspiration.

Endless possibilities with Trotec.
The Speedy 300 is found in the digital tech room in Makerspace Adelaide. It is used for a variety of applications, from iPad and iPhone covers to key holders and leather goods. “One of our oldest members is in his 70’s. He uses the laser cutter to build small wooden toys that he then donates to disadvantaged children,” Luke notes. When it comes to Makerspace and the Speedy 300, there truly are no limitations in what individuals can create, design and build. The laser machine is also used for processing an extensive range of materials, acrylic and MDF being the most popular.
Having a Trotec laser engraving machine has been a really good drawcard in getting people into the Makerspace. When they learn more about it and realise how versatile and useful it is, they often stay here a lot longer and build projects around it. It is also really valuable because all of our members get to use it.

"The laser gives us flexibility."
The Speedy 300 is designed specifically for processing laser materials with unprecedented speed and precision. “One of the best things about the Speedy 300 is that it is super quick at getting through basically any material we throw at it. We can do timbers, plastics, any sort of natural fiber – you name it,” says Luke. The laser machine also plays a major role in maximising efficiency during the production process to thereby provide users with greater levels of flexibility.
We have a lot of people that would be doing stuff by hand manually. They’ll come in and use the Speedy 300 for the first time and then never go back to doing it by hand. For instance, we have got a miniature artist called Joshua Smith who comes in and laser cuts miniature models. What would have previously taken him an hour or two to do with a Stanley knife is now done in a matter of seconds.
