Throughout the world many Fab labs, schools, universities and maker spaces use Trotec laser cutting and engraving machines. In organisations such as this there are frequently multiple users who are working on various applications and who have varied skill sets and experience using the machines. As such managing the use of the laser machines in these businesses can be a difficult task. Fabman is a new way to manage such a diverse environment.

Trotec and Fabman at FAB13 conference

Trotec presented their range of laser technology at the 13th international Fab Lab conference between July 31st and August 6th to network members from over 1,000 labs and 80 countries in Santiago, Chile. Every Trotec laser machine that was used in the workshops was fitted with a Fabman in order to prevent unattended operation. The founder of Fabman was also in attendance to give a workshop on his product to all participants.

About FAB13

Fabman: Increase safety and simplify daily tasks in your shared space

An efficient system for managing shared workspace, Fabman is based on a software solution combined with radio frequency identification (RFID) bridges which are integrated within machines.

A Fabman not only simplifies your daily tasks, it also increases the safety of your workspace. Some examples of how are:

  • Safety: Fabman bridges prevent unauthorised users from operating the machine, such as users who have not received training. The integrated dead man control system also prevents any unattended operation.
  • Booking: This feature allows users to book the machine for a specified length of time. The Fabman bridge can restrict the usage of laser machines to defined members who have booked in combination with their membership card.
  • Automatic payments: These can be made according to a member’s machine usage.
  • Statistics: Analyse a members resource usage, payments and more.
  • Gatekeeper: Fabman member’s cards can control access to your workspace. As Fabman can be easily connected to any electronic door lock you can keep records of both check-in and check-out times.

Proven in practice: Testimonials

Fabman is already being used by many labs and helps managing these shared spaces efficiently:

Happylab Vienna, Thomas Bittner - Lab Manager
"We have more than 1700 members in our lab who have access to our machines 24/7. Thanks to Fabman, I feel confident that only authorised people work on the machines. I can access the system from anywhere and keep tabs on what is happening in our lab. Moreover I know that the machines will turn off in case of an emergency. This helps me to sleep well at night."

Fab Lab Brno, JIC (South Moravian Innovation Centre), Tomáš Mejzlík - Lab Manager
Fabman helped Fab Lab Brno a lot with overcoming initial obstacles in setting up the lab and growing to maturity. I like it for these features:
- Safety: It won't turn the machine on for someone without the proper introduction
- Managing access to the place for hundreds of people
- Gathering statistics about the lab, and about usage of the equipment

Werkstätte Wattens, Center for Rapid Innovation, Christan Perfler - Technical Expert
Fabman is the ideal supplement for our lab. Our customer's profit from the booking tool. If someone books a machine for a certain time, only they can start it with their member card. Moreover, it allows us to automatically charge members for their bookings. Thanks to the Fabman dashboard we always have an overview about the utilisation of our machines and in case of defect equipment we can quickly deactivate it via the app.
