Step by Step

Step 1: Import design

Begin by importing our ready made template or your own design. If you are using our template then you can adapt it to your requirements. Once happy with the design send the job to the laser using the below driver settings.

Process mode Resolution Cut line
Vector Job 1000 dpi None
Halftone Others
Colour Optimised geometries

Step 2: Acrylic laser cutting - TroGlass

Position the first TroGlass sheet on the acrylic cutting grid of your Trotec laser machine and cut the components. To reduce post-processing cleaning you can leave the protective foil on the material. In our example we removed it as it would take a lot of time to remove it from the individual components. The following parameters will differ depending on your laser machine and its available laser power.

Colour Process Power (%) Speed (%) ppi/Hz
Red Cut CO2 100 0.9 1000
Passes Air Assist Z-Offset Advanced
1 On - -

Tip:

We used an SP500 laser cutting machine to cut the back plate in our sample as we wanted to create a larger decoration. The back plate was too large to process with the Speedy 360, however you can alter the size of the laser job to suit your machine.

Step 3: TroLase Foil

In this sample the TroLase Foil is used for two half circles which will form the background that the individual pieces will be placed on. Send the half circle to the laser using the following parameters:

Process mode Resolution Cut line
Vector Job 1000 dpi None
Halftone Others
Colour Optimised geometries

Step 4: Laser cutting - TroLase Foil

Put the TroLase Foil on the acrylic grid and cut the half circle using the following parameters. You will need 2 pieces of material.

Colour Process Power (%) Speed (%) ppi/Hz
Red Cut CO2 40 2 1000
Passes Air Assist Z-Offset Advanced
1 On - -

Step 5: Designing the Solid Wood Maple area

The design for the solid and veneer wood can be sent to the laser with the following parameters:

Process mode Resolution Cut line
Vector Job 1000 dpi None
Halftone Others
Colour Optimised geometries

Step 6: Laser cutting solid wood

Change the acrylic cutting grid for the honeycomb cutting table and cut the maple wood using the following parameters:

Colour Process Power (%) Speed (%) ppi/Hz
Red Cut CO2 100 1.4 1000
Passes Air Assist Z-Offset Advanced
1 On - -

Tip:

To achieve clean laser cutting edges we recommend that you use a small nozzle and a lot of compressed air if it is available to you.

Step 7: Laser cut MDF

Put the MDF plate onto your Trotec laser bed and cut the components using the following parameters:

Colour Process Power (%) Speed (%) ppi/Hz
Red Cut CO2 90 0.4 1000
Passes Air Assist Z-Offset Advanced
1 On - -

Step 8: Assembly

The final stage of producing this sample is the most time-consuming part.

First glue the two star like base plates with the circle of TroGlass Satins. Make sure that the two large pieces are accurately positioned edge to edge. If you have left the protective cover on the material you'll need to turn the decoration over and remove it now.  Now fix the two half circles of TroLase Foil. Once completed you will need to take the time to apply the pieces of the different materials.

Glue it on the white base plate only when you are sure that they are positioned correctly. It is helpful to have an image of the finished graphic to hand for reference. This image can be found in the download document provided.

Once all pieces have been fixed, you can mount the decoration on the wall using the mounting devices.

Inspiration

This sample can also be used to create the backing to a clock. To do this you should cut a hole in the centre of the decoration for the clockwork to fit through.

Thanks to the diverse range of laser engraving supplies including different colours and finishes of TroGlass and wood types, you can easily create a version of the decoration that fits perfectly into any location.
