Examples of Laser Cut & Engraved Toys

Wood is a very popular material for toy making, so laser technology is a great addition to the craft. Laser cutting wood leaves a dark cutting edge, while laser engraving it leaves a brownish mark. This can serve as a great, unique and classic design element. You can create high quality, creative products for a wide range of applications.

Tips for Laser Cutting & Laser Engraving Toys

“Can I laser cut and engrave any wood?”

Seeing as wood is a natural material, you need to consider a few factors before you drive right in. These include the density and resin content of your chosen wood. Soft woods, like balsa, require very little laser power and can be cut very quickly. However, hardwood is much denser and requires more laser power. MDF, which consists of glue and wood fibres, should always be used with compressed air. If you’re still unsure of which wood to choose, Trotec sells a range of laser wood in many different finishes, thicknesses and colours.

“Will my wood engraving always be dark?”

The brownish-coloured laser engraving finish is very common among all laser machines, Trotec included. But, when you process a varnished wood with the appropriate laser settings, you can achieve that desirable white engraving. To do this, we always recommend low power and high speed.

“Help! There is smoke in the processing area. What do I do?”

Wood laser processing is a sublimation process. That means that the solid material is being converted directly into a gaseous form through combustion. Dust is also formed during this process, which is then perceptible as smoke. So, when you are processing wood, we recommend the use of an efficient extraction system. This will help you achieve those perfect engraving and cutting results. Additionally, the service life of the laser machine can also be prolonged if you’re using an extraction system.
