Laser Engraved Patches

Step By Step Instructions

Here, we will show you how to create some trendy little leather patches with your laser engraving machine.

Preparation

You Will Need:

  • Genuine Leather (leftover or scrap pieces)
  • Tape
  • Needle & Thread

Machine Used:

You can create this sample with any machine from the Trotec Speedy series.

Tips:

Try using the 2" lens - you will achieve a homogeneous appearance of the engraving on larger surfaces.

Step by Step

Step 1: Import the Design

Have a go at creating your own design, or feel free to use the template we have provided. We used the relief mode to obtain two different colours on the material in the single engraving pass. This saves a lot of time. Send it to the laser with the recommended laser parameters - note that these may vary depending on the machine you are using and its available laser power.

Print Settings

Process Mode Resolution Cut Line
Relief 500dpi None
Halftone Others
Colour Optimised Geometries, Inner Geometries First

Tip:

We recommend using the grayscale matrix to find the correct values for the relief mode.

Step 2: Laser Process - Leather

Place the leather piece into the laser machine and secure it using your adhesive tape. Ensure that the surface is as even as possible in order to get a consistent engraving effect. Now, engrave and cut the design. Remember, the parameters might vary depending on the machine you are using and its available laser power.

Laser Parameters

Colour Process Power (%) Speed (%) ppi/Hz
Black Engrave CO2 50 50 500
Red Cut CO2 50 1.5 1000
Passes Air Assist Z-Offset Advanced
1 On - High Quality
1 On - -

Step 3: Cleaning & Sewing

Remove your little leather patch from the engraving machine and clean it with a damp cloth (if necessary). Now, you can attach it to your jeans, jackets, hats, bags or anything you want with a simple needle and thread. It's that easy!

Inspiration

The sky is your only limit when creating patches with a laser machine. You can create a logo for a start-up company or even a patch for your local football club. Anything is possible. And, try personalising the patches to add an extra depth of value to your designs
